KO Holiday Cheer!
Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! All from your braces place in Portage, Kalamazoo and Paw Paw: Kalamazoo Orthodontics. The brilliant crew at KO has done another spectacular job of decorating our practice for the holidays. From "candy cane" light poles to our "stockings hung by the chimney," the office and staff are certainly festive. This year our staff enjoyed a "spa day" for themselves at Portfolio Hair and Spa. Special thanks to the folks at Porfolio for wonderful and attentive service for our KO team. After all the pampering and primping, we all got together and enjoyed a very nice evening together for dinner at The Beacon Club who always do a wonderful job with appetizers, main courses, and service. Best to all of you for the holidays and for the New Year! For pictures from our holiday dinner, please see our Facebook page Kalamazoo Orthodontics Facebook page !

Advancements in Orthodontics - Dr. Bowman in Rome
Dr. Jay Bowman spoke for the Formazione Straight Wire - Advancement in Orthodontics 2-day Symposium in Rome, Italy. Jay was the only international speaker invited for the program of Italian orthodontists. He presented lectures on both days to an enthusiastic audience of specialists, including many good friends. Jay discussed his innovative use of miniscrew skeletal anchorage, including some of his inventions such as the Ulysses extrusion spring, TAD bite opening spring, Propeller Arm, and patented Horseshoe Jet. He also reviewed Orthodontic Items of Interest describing the rationale for his signature Butterfly System braces, Kilroy Spring, and Quick Fix device. Finally, Jay also introduced the AcceleDent system to the audience and discussed his current clinical research on this innovation. Jay and his brother, John, also took in some of the historic sites in Rome including the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Spanish Steps, Roman Forum, Vatican museum, Museum of Modern Art, etc. while walking the city. Thanks to Ottaviano and his great team at Gruppo Micerium Ortodonzia/American Orthodontics for their kind invitation to be a part of their program. It was great to reconnect with friends and colleagues from Italy.

AcceleDent - Moving Treatment Along Faster
AcceleDent System
I recently reviewed the Randomized Clinical Trial Results from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio that reported on the effects of the AcceleDent System for a sample of 45 orthodontic patients. This blinded and randomized study examined the effects of regular, light micro-pulsations on both arches of teeth for patients undergoing typical full-bracketed orthodontic treatment. Specifically, the rate of tooth movement was measured for retracting the upper teeth of patients using AcceleDent for 20 minutes per day compared to a control group. Their results demonstrated a statistically significant clinical advantage to those patients using the device. In other words, the AcceleDent patients' tooth movements were demonstrably faster.
The Fast Track to Straight Teeth
Just 20 minutes of daily use enhances the orthodontic force applied by braces or aligners to accelerate the rate of tooth movement. The new AcceleDent™ System is designed to deliver this daily therapy - in the form of gentle microvibrations - in a way that is comfortable and easy to use. The benefit is shortened orthodontic treatment time and all of the benefits associated with the fast track to straight teeth and a great smile.

Advanced Invisalign: Clear Techniques II Seminar
Dr. Bowman just attended another advanced Invisalign course, Clear Techniques II, featuring Dr. Willy Dayan, a very innovative Invisalign provider who practices in Toronto. A hallmark of Dr. Dayan's applications and innovation is the closure of openbites using Invisalign. His approach is slightly different from that of Dr. Bob Boyd, the chairman of the orthodontic department at the University of Pacific, and makes use of the inherent advantages of the "bite plane effect" of clear aligners in designing specific biomechanics to intrude posterior teeth. Considering that openbites are notoriously one of the most complex and perplexing issues to face an orthodontist, both the results demonstrated by Drs. Dayan and Boyd are extremely promising alternatives.
Two of our team members, Paige and Courtney, attended the concurrent Treatment Coordinator Workshop presented by well-known speaker, Rosemary Bray. Dr. Bowman and Rosemary have both spoken on the same C.E. programs in the past. Her enthusiasm and experience are infectious as she offers excellent advice in assisting patients during their orthodontic care.
Kalamazoo Orthodontics was one of the first practices in the U.S. to offer Invisalign when it was first introduced in 1999. We were the first and only Premier Provider of Invisalign in the Kalamazoo area in 2006 and we have continued to maintain that status. Dr. Bowman has created several concepts as adjuncts to Invisalign including Aligner Chewies, Retainer Retrievers, and we have several adjustment pliers in development as well. Dr. Bowman was one of the first 4 U.S. Orthodontists to implement Invisalign Teen as part of the Invisalign Research Team. SHIVER rock band Reunion
SHIVER rock band Reunion 2012
Dr. Jay Bowman reunited with his high school rock band, SHIVER, for another garage band rehearsal on "Swanson's Farm" in the middle of cornfields and wind turbines in rural Illinois. SHIVER began their regular reunions in 2007 with an eye on performing for their 35th Abingdon High School (Abingdon, IL) class reunion in 2010. We did a two-night stand for the class reunion and also played for a party at The Birches in Kalamazoo, MI (where Jay's Kalamazoo Orthodontics is located). We played the same 3 sets of 70s rock in the same venue (Abingdon American Legion Hall) where we had last performed together 35 years previous.
After the reunion gigs, the boyz from Illinoiz thought that was the end of the road, but au contraire, everyone was on-board for more fun and music. Sadly, our singer, Dave Darmer, suffered a stroke only a few days before our reunion rehearsal in 2012. The other "brothers" soldiered on, rockin' the corn, and preparing for future performances. SHIVER consists of Dave Darmer-vocals, Frank Adrian-lead guitar, talk-box, vocals, Alan Swanson-bass, vocals, Steve Riney-guitar, Lyle Dowell-drums, Jay Bowman-keyboards, vocorder, Kenny Moore-electronics, and Roger Reno-industrial light and magic. Shelley Onion settled in as our surrogate singer while Dave is on the mend.

The Quick Fix Device
Dr. S. Jay Bowman's device, The Quick Fix, was the subject of a clinical research project undertaken by Dr. Sohayla Ibrahim at the Orthodontic Department at Mansoura University in Egypt. Her research was published by Ibrahim with her co-workers, Hafez, El Bialy, and Bowman as "Effects of the Quick Fix Appliance in the Correction of Pseudo-Class III Malocclusion" in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. The Quick Fix is a Phase I device designed to advance the upper incisors to specifically correct crossbites of the front teeth. It is primarily utilized in the mixed dentition (typically, the 7-10 year old age group) using a "2X4 set of upper braces."
The Quick Fix was initially introduced by Dr. Bowman in lectures at two American Association of Orthodontists Annual Sessions and later in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics (42:691-697, 2008). Additional articles discussing this simple device and it's applications were published by Bowman in the November and December, 2010 Ortho Tribune, a posterboard presentation at the World Federation of Orthodontists in 2010, the German Kieferorthopadie Nachrichten publication in 2011, and also a piece in Orthodontic Practice US by Bowman and Moskowitz.
The Quick Fix, with it's associated Side Swipe auxiliary, are produced by American Orthodontics, Racine, WI.

Cover of the American Journal of Orthodontics
Kalamazoo Orthodontics is extremely proud to have had our lovely patient, Megan Macher, chosen to grace the cover of our specialty's primary journal, the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. This cover picture of Megan on the December 2011 issue was a unique and rare opportunity. Megan was treated using our own Butterfly System braces and she has a beautiful smile. It is certainly an honor to have our orthodontic results recognized.

Kalamazoo Orthodontics featured in Orthotown
Kalamazoo Orthodontics and Dr. S. Jay Bowman are featured in Orthotown in their December 2011 issue. Earlier in the year, Orthotown published a two-part article entitled, Altering the Extraction Decision with Miniscrews, written by Dr. Bowman (April-May issues). Soon after, we were asked to conduct an interview about our orthodontic practice, some of innovations, and relate our experiences in the specialty. Local photographer, John Gilroy, who has done excellent work for us provided some very interesting views of our office. Chelsea Knorr did a very nice job writing the piece and Ben Lund provided the editing. Thanks also go to Dr. Randy Womack, the chief editor of Orthotown.
