Invisalign Teen Research Group

In 2008, four intrepid explorers were tasked with examining the use of clear aligners with adolescents.  The results of this prospective evaluation have now been presented in two articles in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics.  The most recent, "Aligner Treatment in the Teenage Patient," appears in the February, 2013 issue.

The "ring leader" of the Invisalign Teen Research Group was Orhan Tuncay, the chairman of the orthodontic department at Temple University and the author of the first book on Invisalign.  He recruited orthodontists, Jay Bowman (Portage, MI), Brian Amy (Oklahoma City, OK), and Jonathan Nicozisis (Princeton, NJ) to participate in the investigation of Invisalign Teen, conducted in each of the 4 practice locations.  Data was gathered as patients were treated and results were achieved.

The intent of this research was to assist clinicians in making appropriate decisions regarding the applicability of clear aligner treatment for teens.  Compliance is king for all manner of orthodontic treatments and Invisalign Teen is no exception.

The advantages to Invisalign Teen include: esthetic appearance, simple maintenance, easy cleaning, no diet restrictions seen with traditional braces, and better oral hygiene.

To see how Invisalign or Invisalign Teen may benefit you, call Kalamazoo Orthodontics at 269-344-2466 to make an appointment for a complimentary evaluation with Dr. S. Jay Bowman at any of our three locations:  Portage, Kalamazoo, and Paw Paw.

Videography for Clear Collection, Designed by Dr. Bowman

Basic videography for Hu-Friedy's Clear Collection of instruments was accomplished on-site at Kalamazoo Orthodontics.  Dr. Jay Bowman was recorded providing hand-ons instructions for the use of the initial four instruments in this set. Jay created the Clear Collection to enhance the treatment experience with clear aligner treatments such as Invisalign or even minor treatment with clear retainers.  The Clear Collection should be introduced sometime in Summer of 2013 and the individual videos will be eventually found on the Hu-Friedy.com website as well as our KalamazooOrtho YouTube Channel.

The Hu-Friedy Manufacturing Company, based in Chicago, is a global enterprise that serves all aspects of dentistry.  Megan Mendes, Senior Product Manager from Hu-Friedy and their videographer, Ray, were on-hand for the recordings at Kalamazoo Orthodontics primary office location in Portage MI.

55th OERF and 40th Moyers

President of OERF, Dr. Chris Klein, introduced Dr. Jay Bowman's presentation at the 55th Annual Meeting

Dr. Bowman was invited to speak at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation, held in San Antonio, Texas.  Jay opened the start of the 4-day program with a presentation entitled, "Orthodontic Items of Interest."  He based his multi-topic lecture on the historic, Dental Items of Interest journal, that was published for 40 years starting at the turn of the 20th century.  This was Jay's 4th appearance at OERF with lectures at the 50th Anniversary as well as the 53rd and 45th.  OERF was established by alumni of the Saint Louis University Department of Orthodontics in 1958 but the annual lecture meetings are open to any orthodontists.  At the most recent meeting, faculty and students from the University of Texas San Antonio Department of Orthodontics were in attendance.

Jay left the OERF meeting early to return to The University of Michigan to attend the 40th Annual Moyers Symposium, an international growth symposium that has drawn the world's leaders on facial growth, development and treatment.  The slate of speakers at both OERF and Moyers were top-notch.  To celebrate the 40th, the attendees were treated to a reception in the Skyboxes at Michigan Stadium, "the Big House;" including a rare visit to the Michigan football locker room.  In addition, the folks were permitted to "play" out on the field in that recently updated facility that holds more than 100,000 "Go Blue" fans.

Attendees at OERF took a Segway Tour of San Antonio including an Alamo drive-by
