The Greek Connection

The Greek Connection. Honoring two incredibly influential orthodontists from Dr. Bowman's alma mater, Saint Louis University. Drs. Pete and Gus Sotiropoulos are both graduates of the orthodontic department, in fact, Pete was the first graduate. Both have been faculty members for life and have helped direct the careers of so many orthodontists for over 50 years. Many thanks for all of the insight, guidance, and education that these two giants of our specialty have provided.

Congratulations to KO patient, Nick Tiller, a member of the AA State Tournament, Michigan USSSA Baseball Champions!! Nick is sporting Dr. Bowman's invention, the Quick Fix device to correct the crossbite involving his front teeth, and is pictured next to Kalamazoo's own, Derek Jeter.  Both are pretty darn good shortstops!

Re-thinking What You Drink!

Congratulations to Kalamazoo Orthodontics patient, Sarah Bassett for her Delton-Kellogg Schools Science Fair project: "Re-thinking What You Drink."  Sarah examined the damaging effects from popular soft drinks on teeth.  The KO Team assisted Sarah in gathering data (using our DIAGNOdent laser fluorescence device) on the demineralization of teeth due to the very acidic content of these beverages.  The damage to the teeth she tested was eye-opening!  Check-out Sarah's smile-in-progress with Dr. Bowman's signature Butterfly System braces . . . and also her cool KO rockstar tee-shirt!

Dr. Jay Bowman, Honorary Membership to the South African Society of Orthodontists

Dr. Jay Bowman and his son, Cameron, experienced a very special trip to South Africa.  Jay had been invited to speak for the South Africa Society of Orthodontist Annual Meeting in Durban.  They first visited the port city of Cape Town, framed by Table Mountain, and a busy waterfront.  They ferried out to Robben Island to visit the prison where Nelson Mandela had been held for 10 years.  They drove to Cape Point to view the convergence of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and Simontown’s penguins.  Flying to Kruger Park, an enormous game preserve, was next.  Three days of game drives with their guide, Nick, were an awe-inspiring look at African wildlife.  Driving right up to prides of lions, leopards in trees, 60 elephants crossing the Sand River, seeing a very rare Serval cat, often within 10 feet in an open Range Rover (no windows-no roof) was unimaginable.  Next, our hosts took us to Phinda Game Park in the heart of a sand forest in Zulu country.  This provided different wildlife experiences with cheetah, more lions, an African rock python, and mischievous monkeys.  The SASO Conference was held in scenic, seaside Durban where Jay spoke over three days to 107 of the 120 orthodontists in the country - the largest meeting they’ve ever had. At the conclusion of the event, Jay was made an honorary member of their organization.  While in Durban, we visited the largest mall in the Southern hemisphere and Cam climbed the highest indoor rock wall in the world.  A visit to South Africa was certainly a “bucket list” experience.

The South African Society of Orthodontists invited Dr. S. Jay Bowman to speak for their SASO conference in Durban in August 2012.  Jay and Cam visited the beautiful city of Cape Town with their hosts Dr. and Mrs. Sharrad Cara and Dr. and Mrs. John Eloff.  They also traveled to Rattray’s @ Mala Mala in the Kruger Game Preserve followed by Phinda Game Park with Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Wright.  Dr. and Mrs. John Dancaster then hosted them during the  3-day conference in Durban.

Dr. Jay Bowman was invited to be the keynote speaker for the South African Society of Orthodontists and provide lectures over 3 days in Durban, S.A. In addition, Jay and his son Cam had the unique experience of also visiting historic Cape Town, along with both Kruger and Phina Game Preserves, while making great new friends along the way.
