Board Certified

What is a Board Certified Orthodontist?

A board certified orthodontist is an orthodontist who has voluntarily gone through hundreds of additional hours of preparation to demonstrate their judgment, skills and knowledge required for providing the highest level of patient care. They have achieved board certification through the American Board of Orthodontics, the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and in affiliation with the American Association of Orthodontists.

An orthodontist is a dentist who has not only completed a graduate program in dentistry to receive their DDS or DMD (Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine), but has also gone through a competitive residency at a CODA-accredited orthodontic program for an additional 2-3 years to be trained specifically in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. 

Achieving board certification is the last step in a long and intensive educational experience to ultimately provide excellent patient care. 

It takes dedication to make it to the top.

Golden Molar Award to Dr. Bowman

Golden Molar Award to Dr. Bowman.   During the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session, Rita Bauer (from the University of Toronto) presented Dr. Jay Bowman and the team at Kalamazoo Orthodontics with the “Golden Molar Award” for our innovations and teamwork. 

The award consisted of two lovely pieces of autographed cartoon artwork from the Canadian cartoonist, Lynn Johnston--known for her “For Better or For Worse” newspaper comic.  Lynn is an honored member of the Canadian Cartoonists Hall of Fame (www.fborfw.com).  It is quite a thrill to receive these dentally related pieces for display in our practice.

We are quite proud of Rita’s recognition of Team KO and grateful for her friendship.

Tiger Trek

Amberly Elementary School Tiger Trek Special Guest: Lindsay Tarpley – Two Time Olympic Gold Medalist

Tiger Trek is the PTA’s Major Fundraiser of the school year and is an all school Run/Walk-A-Thon.  Tiger Trek Guest of Honor was two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in Women’s Soccer-Lindsay Tarpley. Lindsay attended Amberly Elementary School and as a student had a dream to play in the Olympics. Her dream became a reality by winning a gold medal in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.  

Kalamazoo mascots were also on hand to encourage the participants:  Slappy from the Kalamazoo Wings and Porter from the Kalamazoo Growlers.  Kalamazoo Orthodontics’ patient, Matthew King and his Dad, Thomas, were some of the participants in this event.

We were pleasantly surprised to see that the newest Invisalign TEEN marketing efforts feature a reference to one of the published research projects that Dr. Bowman and Team KO were a substantial part of.

Orthodontics: Definitely Not Just "Kid Stuff"

Orthodontic treatment is definitely not just "kid stuff."  Adult orthodontic patient, Stacy Reed, describes her perceptions of Kalamazoo Orthodontics.  Stacy was a participant in a InvisalignInsignia Advanced Smile Design​ supported study and has lovely results.

Editorial Board Member

Dr. Bowman was recently invited to join the editorial board of the Seminars in Orthodontics journal.  Thank you to both Editors-in-Chief (current and Emeritus) Drs. Moskowitz and Sadowsky for the invitation.  It is an honor to contribute to such an august group of orthodontists from around the world.

Hockey Smile

Hockey Smile. We're proud of Blake Jarrett's accomplishments on-and-off the ice. Keep an eye out for this guy's hockey skills.

Invisalign Clear Techniques Course

Dr. Bowman attended another advanced Invisalign course (Clear Techniques II)—this one provided by Dr. Bill Kottemann from Minnesota.  It was very kind of him to discuss the use of Dr. Bowman’s Clear Collection instruments @hu-friedy

 to enhance orthodontic treatment with Invisalign and Invisalign TEEN.

Kalamazoo Orthodontics is once again the only Invisalign Elite and Teen Provider in Southwest Michigan.
