Questions
Q. What music is playing in your office while you work, or in your car while you are driving?
A. I've been a record collector since I could buy my first 45 disk, I've owned a record store, been the music director / DJ for college radio, and I continue to play keyboards in amateur bands. Consequently, there is always music surrounding me from all eras and styles. My collection of disks is shuffled through and permeates my environment.
Q. Describe the day your practice opened.
A. My first day, I assumed the practice of an orthodontist and we worked together for four months. It was so exciting to finally begin to use the education and experience that I had worked so hard for since I was a kid.
Q. If your most used dental instrument could talk what would it tell you?
A. That would be our orthodontic braces and they would tell us to keep paying attention to detail and diligence; they can't do it on their own.
Q. What would you do if you were not a dental professional?
A. I'd like to think I could have been a musician, but I am thankful that I'm a much better orthodontist than keyboard player.
Q. What is your favorite outside the office activity?
A. Traveling and speaking on orthodontics has been a wonderful experience. Otherwise, music and movies.
Q. What is your most memorable case as a practitioner?
A. Probably, the 10 patients that I treated as part of the requirements for membership in the Angle Society. Studying these cases in detail during the process was very educational.
Q. What is your favorite tooth and why?
A. Canines or eye-teeth are favorites because they provide such a challenge. They are often impacted, the anatomy of the crowns are varied and make bracket placement difficult, yet they are the cornerstone of a smile.
Q. What has been your shining moment in dentistry?
A. My proudest moment was the presentation of the Angle Research Award to me and my mentor, Lysle Johnston for our research paper in the Angle Orthodontist in 2000.
Q. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only take one Hu-Friedy instrument, what would it be and why?
A. Assuming that I'm limited to orthodontic instruments: A carbide-inserted bird beak pliers with cutter or simply a ligature cutter. Never know when you might need some kind of pliers or cutter.

Prevent Concussions for Student Athletes
As student athletes head back to school, it is important that they protect not only their teeth and jaws but also to help prevent concussions. We provide complimentary mouthguards for our patients to fit over their braces here at Kalamazoo Orthodontics. Make sure to pick one up at your next orthodontic appointment.
Under Senate legislation signed into law last year, Michigan is now among 39 states that regulate sports concussions and the return to athletic activity.
The new law requires adults involved with a youth athletic activity - coaches, employees and volunteers - to complete a concussion awareness training program. The school or organization must provide athletes and their parents with information on the signs/symptoms and consequences of concussions; students and parents must sign and return a form indicating they have received the information.
Any young athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion must be immediately removed from the physical activity. The athlete cannot return until he or she receives written clearance to play from a health professional.
Concussions are a very serious injury and can occur in any sport or recreational activity. For more information about the Michigan sports concussion law as well as links to resources for athletes, parents and coaches, visit www.michigan.gov/sportsconcussion.

The Vertical - Clear Collection from Hu-Friedy
Dr. Bowman's Clear Collection of instruments, new from Hu-Friedy, includes a device called, "The Vertical." These pliers are for fine-tuning and further individualizing Invisalign treatment for our patients. Specifically, The Vertical creates an impression in the aligner plastic to enhance rotational correction for individual teeth but can also be used to increase the retention of clear aligners. Something new from Kalamazoo Orthodontics and Hu-Friedy.
Our New Alger-Light
Special thanks to David Alger and the Alger Company (http://www.algercompany.com/Algerlight/) as we have installed a new Alger-Light with LEDs in our Kalamazoo location. Kalamazoo Orthodontics appreciated our original Alger Lights so much that we moved and re-installed them when our Portage office location was designed by Dr. Bowman. Press Release: Hu-Friedy and Dr. S. Jay Bowman
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Introducing Hu-Friedy’s Clear Collection: a New Line of Clear
Aligner Instruments
Clear Solutions for Customized Efficiency
CHICAGO, IL – August 5, 2013 –
Hu-Friedy, a global leader in the manufacturing of dental instruments and
products, today announced the North American launch of the Clear Collection, a
new line of Orthodontic Clear Aligner Instruments. Set to launch globally later this year, the
Clear Collection, offers Orthodontists four instruments that help accent, individualize
and optimize the biomechanics of clear aligners in the office.
Due to the recent clear aligner trend
in Orthodontics, Hu-Friedy in partnership with Hu-Friedy Thought Leader, Dr. S.
Jay Bowman DMD MSD, designed the Clear Collection to help streamline the
treatment process. Each instrument within
the collection has a unique function that, when properly applied to clear
aligners, allows for easier in-office adjustments and tweaks. Instruments include:
·
The
Tear Drop - An instrument that creates a notch at the gingival margin of
clear aligners where elastic hooks are required within the arch. It also provides a reservoir to hold the
elastics in place, permitting easy manipulation of elastics by the patient.
·
The
Vertical - Focuses on the over-correction of rotations by producing an
indentation at the mesial or distal angles of a tooth.
·
The
Horizontal - Creates an indentation to accent individual
root torque. Retention of either the
clear aligners or retainers is enhanced by placing this indent into a tooth’s
undercut or below a bonded attachment.
·
The
Hole Punch - creates a half moon cutout for relief of
clear aligners around bonded buttons used for elastics. It also can nip away plastic to provide soft
tissue clearance to prevent aligner impingement of tissue.
“Hu-Friedy’s Thought Leader program
enables us to create cutting edge products inspired by professionals that are
leaders in their field of dental expertise.” says Ken Serota, President of
Hu-Friedy Mfg. Co., LLC “The Clear Collection is an example of this relationship,
our collaboration with Dr. S. Jay Bowman led to the launch of a new generation
of innovative orthodontic instruments designed to help ease the clear aligner
experience for both the practitioner and the patient by allowing on-the-spot
aligner modifications.”
