DR. P.R. BEGG MEMORIAL. University of Adelaide, Australia. Dr. Begg was the most influential orthodontist from Australia and was honored with a museum-worthy collection at the Adelaide residency program. Start with this unique note: Begg’s godfather was U.S. President Herbert Hoover! He was one of the few orthodontists trained by the “father of modern orthodontics,” Dr. Edward H. Angle; attending the Angle School in Pasadena in 1925. Begg developed his own technique (book published in ’65) that was displayed at the Smithsonian along with Angle’s office. At age 82, he received the Officer of the Order of Australia after 55 years of practice and influencing the specialty of orthodontics. This was my second visit to beautiful Adelaide, enjoying the Begg display, and the Adelaide “Walk of Fame” that includes a plaque honoring Begg across the street from his office location (and includes one for his classmate, Nobel Prize winner, Lord Howard Florey).
