Dr. Bowman just stumbled upon and acquired a copy of (Dental) Items of Interest, published in 1887. This book contains a copy of Edward Angle's (the father of modern orthodontics) first publication. Angle read this paper at the 9th Int'l Medical Congress when he was a professor in Minneapolis. It describes his first of hundreds of orthodontic inventions, leading up in later years to "edgewise" braces (that are not that different in many aspects to what we use today). Orthodontics is the oldest specialty in all of dentistry, thanks to Angle, and it is fascinating to learn where we came from.
